Hormonally controlled ovarian stimulation and ova collection
Controlled hormonal ovarian stimulation is perform to induce the growth of multiple ovarian follicles and, therefore, the maturation of several ova. It is performed by administering subcutaneous hormonal injections and requires they be administered for approximately 10 days. At the end of the stimulation period the final maturation of the ovarian follicles is induced with an hCG or GnRH-agonist and 36 hours later the ova are collected.
Ova collection is performed under sedation through the vagina with a thin paracentesis needle under ultrasound monitoring. The average duration of the procedure is 15 minutes and it is followed by rest and observation of the woman. Overnight hospital stay is not required and the woman can return home on the same day.
